NCFC's next film - June 5
Grandma
This Sunday, June 5, The North County Film Club will be presenting the film Grandma. The film will be shown at 3:00 pm, Carmike Theater, Oceanside, Mission and College.
Here's the trailer for the film. Looks like it's going to be a good one:
Pride
After seeing our last film, Pride, I checked out google and found this interesting video that shows the real people that were involved in all the demonstrations. You can sort of pick out who was who. This video is very long, but if you just see the first couple of minutes, you'll recognize some of the characters from the film - only these are the real life characters.
Google Doodles
Did you see the Google Doodle on June 2 about Lotte Reiniger. What a great story about an amazing early film animator and a fantastic paper cutter. It's really interesting also to see how Google produces the doodles. Check it out:

NCFC's Next Film - The Past
Next Sunday, March 20, The North County Film Club will present The Past. This film was made in France and directed by Iranian, Asghar Farhadi.
Coming back to finalize his divorce procedure, Ahmad, an Iranian man, arrives in France after four years to meet his (soon-to-be) ex-wife Marie and her daughters from her previous marriage. She is in a relationship with an Arab man named Samir who has a son and whose wife is in a coma. The relationship between Marie and her older daughter, Lucie, is strained because Lucie disapproves of her mother's relationship with Samir. Things get more complicated when the older daughter discloses something horrible she has done.
Bi Polar Disorder
After seeing Infinitely Polar Bear I thought I'd include a little info about Bipolar Disorder. I was informed by one of our members not to refer to this disorder as manic depression and that the PC term is Bipolar Disorder. Duly noted. Thanks. This information was googled from the internet:
What is Bipolar Depression?
Bipolar depression refers to the "lows," or depressive phase, of bipolar disorder.Understanding the Larger Condition, Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder—the larger condition that includes bipolar depression—is a lifelong, or chronic, illness. It’s a condition that affects the brain in a way that can cause extreme mood swings that vary in length. People with bipolar disorder can go from mania (the “highs”)—feeling euphoric or revved up and irritable—to depression (the “lows”)—feeling down or hopeless. These highs and lows are called “episodes.”- Affects about 12.3 million people in the United States and as many as 60 million people worldwide
- Half of all patients begin seeing symptoms between the ages of 15 and 25, but it can begin at any age
- There is no cure, but for many people the symptoms can be controlled with treatment
- Bipolar disorder is sometimes referred to as manic depression
- Some people may experience mood swings that are less extreme than a full manic episode, known as hypomania

John Anderson's Lecture is SRO at the Oceanside Library
Last week John Anderson gave a very interesting lecture at the Oceanside Library. He compared some of the history of the Los Angeles Police Department under Chief Parker with the book L.A. Confidential. After the talk about the police department, John discussed the book further with the library's book club. There was standing room only for this outstanding event. Wish you all could have been there.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
Our next film is Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. It will be shown February 7 at 3:00. The following is a trailer to give you an idea of the story:
Greg is a seventeen year old high school student. He and his co-worker Earl spend a lot of time making parodies of classic films. He tries every social group at his high school, but doesn’t have many friends. When his mother suggests he befriend Rachel, a girl he once knew in Hebrew school, his outlook changes forever.

In Memoriam
Abe Vicoda finally died! He'd been reported dead in People magazine several years ago. But he proved them wrong and lived to the ripe old age of 94. We remember him as Fish on the Barney Miller show, but he was probably most famous for his role in the Godfather.

The Girls in the Band
Our next film for the North County Film Club will be the acclaimed Girls in the Band. The film will be shown Sunday, January 24 at 3:00.
The Girls in the Band is everything a worthwhile documentary should be, and then some: engaging, informative, thorough and brimming with delightful characters. Shining a long-overdue spotlight on the shamefully forgotten women who flourished as jazz musicians at a time when men ruled the beat, Judy Chaikin’s beautifully assembled film gives voice to performers whose names are too often unknown even among their musical sisters of the present day. Dancing In Jaffa - November 22
The following is a trailer for Dancing in Jaffa which will be the last film of the season, Sunday, Nov. 22.
Renowned ballroom dancer, Pierre Dulaine, returns to his hometown of Jaffa, Israel, nostalgic for the streets of his youth but nervous and dismayed by the strong current of racial animosity that now serves as the norm. Fueled by his belief in dancing's power to build self-esteem and social awareness, Dulaine brings his popular Dancing Classrooms program to three Jaffa-based schools where he teaches ballroom dancing to the ethnically mixed population of children. Dulaine selects the most focused dancers to train for a citywide competition, pairing Palestinians with Jews, putting many of the children's and, more pointedly, their families' beliefs to the test.
As a followup to Tangerines, I tried to make sense of the Georgia/Russia war and what it was all about. I was going to write a simplified version of the conflict but it's such a complicated subject. Instead I'm posting a link that I found online and in case you're interested it might help to unravel the situation:

Coming to a theater near you, The 33. I'm really excited to see this movie because I just finished the book Deep Dark Down about the Chilean coal miners. The film stars Antonio Banderas. Can't wait.
Hope to see you all next Sunday for Dancing in Jaffa.

Tangerines - Film Club Selection for 11/8
This film was nominated for an Academy Award, 2014 for Best Foreign Film. It lost to Ida, the film we viewed in September.
Wild Tales Followup
A follow up to our last film, the Argentinian film, Wild Tales in which we saw 6 different vignettes mostly dealing with the unfair laws and the frustrations of living in Buenos Aires. You can imagine the frustration when you have to live with this unfair law in Argentina:
In Argentina, there is a law that states that Argentine nightclubs must play the same amount of tango music as all other forms of music combined!!
In Memoriam
Last week we lost a member of the North County Film Club and my very good friend, Jane Gorman. Jane was an avid film goer and was so happy to be a member of our club. Jane was a physical education teacher most of her adult life and was also an assistant principal. She loved to play golf, travel, read, watch films and most of all have fun. She leaves her husband Jeff and three sons, Jason, Justin and Jeremy and two grandchildren that she adored. I've known Jane since we were in the fourth grade in Pomona, California and we've remained friends all these years. She will be dearly missed.
Also leaving us last week, Maureen O'Hara. I think Jane would have liked sharing her memoriam with Maureen.
.
Hope to see you all Sunday, the 8th for Tangerines.
